A Tribute to Keith Jarrett & Paul Motian
April 11, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
$10 – $15Keith Jarrett (piano) and Paul Motian (drums) share a highly expressive approach to jazz, and their music is often exotic and sublime. They came up in the late 1950s and went on to lead some of the most unique bands of the 20th century, using musicians from all over the world, and combining free-jazz, gospel, traditional folk songs, rock, post-bop, and classical music into their unmistakable brand of jazz. This show will feature arrangements of their compositions, and the band will explore their music through the lens of the 21st century. Expect it to range from beautiful folk melodies, to unrelenting modal jazz, to Cuban rumba rhythms, to eerie avant-garde classical, to earthy rock. A night of creativity not to be missed!
“Sometimes I’m still playing stuff on the drumset that I’ve never played before, because I’m not thinking drumset, I’m not thinking cymbals and drums… what’s coming out is an extension of me and what’s inside me”
-Paul Motian
“…there’s one thing that I know well – that I feel very alone. It’s the price you have to pay if you want to be yourself… In reality, I feel truly at ease only in music”
– Keith Jarrett
Jamie Oehlers – tenor sax
Jeremy Thomson – guitar
