Born and raised in Perth, Phil grew up surrounded by jazz as his father, Dick, was a well known Perth jazz trombonist. He has played in many bands since 1979, including the Magic Dream Big Band, Swan City Jazzmen, Fine and Dandy, Nooky Hot Six, Downbeat, Eureka, Accord. Currently he is musical director of the South Perth Lions Big Band, his own band, the Manhattons, and a member of Blue Monk, Powerhouse, Stevedores, Aardvark, Mal Jennings Jazz Ambassadors, Satin Doll. He spent 2 years in the UK where he performed and studied with Kathy Stobart and Olaf Vas. He spent 12 years in the US where he completed a music Masters Degree at Portland State University and played as a featured artist at more than 60 jazz festivals. Amongst others, he has played with trombonist Spiegel Wilcox who had played with Bix Beiderbecke in the 1920's!
