The UWA Jazz Club (UWAJC) is preparing to celebrate its fourth O-Day Festival on Friday 21 February 2014! Founded under the auspices of JazzWA in 2011, UWAJC exists to organise and promote jazz-related activities (including performances, jam sessions, listening sessions, workshops and masterclasses) at the University of Western Australia. It aims to raise the profile of jazz on campus at UWA and provide a platform for both students and professional artists and groups to perform there.
2013 was a big year for UWAJC. In February, an ensemble of UWAJC members performed a selection of jazz standards to a large and appreciative audience in UWA’s Hackett Café as part of the University’s spectacular Centenary celebration, “LUMINOUSnight”. Later in 2013, club members started performing regularly in the UWA Tavern. They also organised and participated in a workshop with world-renowned saxophonist and jazz educator Jamie Oehlers.
The O-Day Festival is the biggest annual event organised by the UWA Student Guild. Over 5 000 new and attending students flock to James Oval, which from 11am to 2pm is covered with stalls run by Guild Clubs and Faculty Societies, sporting groups, and other community organisations. Although open to all students, O-Day is the best opportunity new UWA students have to get involved in the social side of University life.
UWAJC is getting ready to celebrate O-Day the only way we know how – with a jazz jam at our stall which is open to all! So if you know any jazz fans starting at (or returning to) UWA this year, tell them to look out for the UWAJC stall on O-Day. If you are a new or attending UWA student then come and say hi, have a jam or just take a seat and enjoy the music.
For those students interested in joining UWAJC, membership is just $5 ($7 for non-Guild members). As a member of UWAJC, you’ll be added to our mailing list and stay updated on all upcoming events. You’ll be entitled to get involved with the running of the Club by joining our Committee. If you’re a musician, you will have the opportunity to perform with the Club. UWAJC members also receive discounted entry to selected JazzWA events in Perth. Finally, since UWAJC is funded primarily by membership fees, you’ll get the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that you’re supporting jazz at UWA and in the wider Perth community!

See you on O-Day!
