Here is an outline of JAZZWA’s projects and activities in 2013:
JAZZNOW!
The 2013 JazzNOW! Jazzcamp was held at the Western Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) from July 8th-12th which saw a total of 59 aspiring young jazz musicians participate in this week-long series of masterclasses and workshops covering topics such as jazz improvisation, small and large ensemble playing, instrumental technique, rhythmic development, practice techniques and performance presentation. This years lunchtime concerts featured groups “The Johannes Luebbers Dectet”, “Shameem” and “Tal Cohen Quartet” and the camp was delivered by 8 main tutors; Penny King (vocals), Marty Pervan (trumpet), James Sandon (saxophone), Chris Greive (trombone), Freddie Grigson (guitar), Pete Jeavons (bass), Russell Holmes (piano) and Daniel Susnjar (drums), with some help from Karl Florisson (bass) and Jon Fernandez (vocal accompanist). This years Jazzcamp also saw the inclusion of a Latin-jazz ensemble as one of the large ensembles, run by Marty Pervan, which was thoroughly enjoyed by those students involved.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Australind Senior High School
In 2013, JAZZWA organized, and part-sponsored, an all-star group to perform at the Australind Senior High School’s jazz program launch at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on Thursday Feb 28th. One of only a handful of schools with a specialist jazz program in Australia, ASHS is of obvious strategic importance in the development of jazz in WA’s South West. ASHS has also previously hosted workshops and performances for JAZZWA mini-tours to the region.
Jazz By The Bay (Dunsborough Jazz Festival)
JAZZWA provided support and consulted with festival organizers in the lead up to, and after, the inaugural Jazz Bay The Bay festival which is funded principally through the City of Busselton. This festival is set to become a regular fixture on the WA jazz calendar and is a welcome development in regional jazz activities
PERTH INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL SPONSORSHIP
JAZZWA was a sponsor of the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival by presenting an Explorations Jazz Jam session at the Ellington Jazz Club on each of the 3 nights of the festival. Housebands provided by JAZZWA were “Abbey Foster Falle” (May 24th), “Tom O’Halloran Trio” (May 25th) and “The Grid” (May 26th). JAZZWA also provided administrative support to the 2013 PIJF.
UWA JAZZ CLUB
Throughout 2013 JAZZWA continued its support of the UWA Jazz Club and its various activities. These include numerous gigs on campus at the UWA Tavern, a showcase performance as part of UWA’s centenary celebrations, a number of jazz jam sessions (for O-day festival and international jazz day among others) and a jazz improvisation workshop with Jamie Oehlers (Head of Jazz at WAAPA) on October 22nd.
ALAN CORBET SCHOLARSHIP
In 2013, JAZZWA was a sponsor and supporter of the inaugural Alan Corbet Scholarship (ACS) administered by the Perth Jazz Society. Established in memory of Alan Corbet, the ACS seeks to support the development of an emerging jazz artist through the awarding of a $1000 scholarship, to contribute to the artistic development of the chosen applicant. The scholarship is awarded annually and is decided by a panel of leading Western Australian jazz musicians. The winner of the 2013 ACS was trumpeter Andrew Gioia.
