Here is an outline of JAZZWA’s projects and activities in 2012:
JAZZNOW!
Jazzcamp
Jazzcamp 2012 was held at the Western Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) from July 9th-13th which saw a total of 51 aspiring young jazz musicians participate in this week-long series of masterclasses and workshops covering topics such as jazz improvisation, small and large ensemble playing, instrumental technique, rhythmic development, practice techniques and performance presentation. This years lunchtime concerts featured groups “Victoria Newton Sextet”, “Daramad” and “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” and the camp was delivered by 8 tutors; Libby Hammer (vocals), Marty Pervan (trumpet), Troy Roberts (saxophone), Tilman Robinson (trombone), Freddie Grigson (guitar), Pete Jeavons (bass), Russell Holmes (piano) and Daniel Susnjar (drums).
Youth Jazz Jam Session
A JazzNOW! youth jazz jam session (presented in collaboration with Explorations Jazz Jam Session project – see below) was held on Saturday Oct 20th 2012 at the Overflow Cafe in Northbridge.
Regional School Incursion
Friday June 22nd 2012 saw the Freddie Grigson Quartet deliver a performance and workshop at Australind Senior High School as part of their mini-tour of southwest presented by JAZZWA (see regional development).
JAZZAZIZ
In 2012, JAZZWA recorded a number of works by two groups (“Horizon Art Orchestra” and “Abbey, Foster, Falle”) for use on future volumes of the Jazzaziz compilation CD.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Freddie Grigson Quartet Tour
(Thursday June 21st – Ellington Jazz Club, Perth)
Friday June 22nd – Australind Senior High School (afternoon workshop followed by evening performance)
Saturday June 23rd – Margaret River Arts Centre
Long having held the position of fulltime guitar tutor at WAAPA, Freddie Grigson is a highly respected jazz guitarist and in 2012 he released his second album (“Past and Present”) featuring his original compositions and his new group consisting of Tal Cohen (piano), Karl Florisson (doublebass) and Jacob Evans (drums). This mini-tour gave Freddie a chance to further promote his new album, as well as providing valuable touring experience for the group and a platform for the musicians to further develop their considerable talents as jazz performers.

Jam sessions were held on;

Tuesday July 17th – The Ellington Jazz Club featuring the Dale Boaden Trio
Saturday Oct 20th – Overflow Cafe featuring JazzNOW! students
UNIVERSITY OF WA JAZZ CLUB
The second year of it’s existence, 2012 saw the UWAJC undertake many activities with administrative (and some financial support) from JAZZWA. These include jam sessions and performances on campus, ‘listening sessions’ (informal get togethers where people share their favourite jazz music with each other over lunch) and collaborations with other UWA student guild clubs. The UWAJC committee of 2011/12 comprised Ben Craig-Wadham (President), Phil Cilli (Vice-President), Nick Abbey (Treasurer), Andrew Ball (Secretary) and committee members Ben Hogan and Callan Adler.
OTHER
2012 JAZZWA Showcase
This event was a partnership between JAZZWA and WAM (The Western Australian Music Industry) and was held at The Bakery on May 28th 2012 – as part of the 2012 WAMI festival. Featuring “The Horizon Art Orchestra”, “The Glyn MacDonald Quartet” and “The Victoria Newton Sextet” (25 musicians in all) the event was a success and the performances were also filmed and recorded.
Northbridge Piazza Jazz Series
In partnership with the City of Perth, JAZZWA programmed a series of Wednesday afternoon jazz concerts at the Northbridge Piazza in April 2012. This series will gave the selected groups fantastic exposure to the general public by way of the location of the concerts, and the giant screen at the Piazza that will advertised the groups and their websites. The featured groups were: Carl Mackey Trio (April 4th), TLC Trio (April 11th), Rick Webster Trio (April 18th), Abbey/Foster/Falle (April 25th).
Unesco International Jazz Day Concert
JAZZWA, in partnership with The Ellington Jazz Club, WAYJO, WAAPA and The Perth Jazz Society, co-presented a concert for UNESCO International Jazz Day at The Ellington Jazz Club on April 30th. The featured groups included the 8 piece ‘Blowfish’ (featuring WAAPA’s head of jazz Jamie Oehlers), a WAAPA all -star student ensemble and WAYJO. Before the concert Graham Wood presented a strong case for the need for and benefits of a Perth International Jazz Festival to the politicians, corporate and community leaders that were invited to attend.
