The Perth Jazz Society is pleased to announce the winner of the Alan Corbet Fund Scholarship as Perth trombonist James van de Ven.
In 2013 the Perth Jazz Society, in partnership with the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, JazzWA, Jazz Fremantle and The Ellington, launched the inaugural ʻAlan Corbet Scholarshipʼ (ACS). Established in memory of Alan Corbet, the ACS seeks to support the development of an emerging jazz artist through the awarding of a $1000 scholarship, to contribute to the artistic development of the chosen applicant.
Now in its second year, the recipient for the 2014 award – James van de Ven is currently studying at the WA Academy of Performing Arts. Performing in a variety of ensembles including the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra since 2008, James has been selected to participate in the prestigious Brubeck Instituteʼs Summer Jazz Colony. As the first year that the Institute have accepted international applications, James is one of three chosen from WA to attend the program.
The one-week program will allow James to study with the Brubeck Instituteʼs faculty, guest artists and master teachers in combo rehearsals, master classes and private instruction as well as attend classes in jazz theory, advanced jazz improvisation and seminars on the music of Dave Brubeck and other topics.
The skills gained during this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for James will allow him to develop further as a jazz artist in WA and share his experience with the broader jazz community.
Alan Corbet was known amongst the jazz community as a brilliant advocate for the art form. His commitment to the jazz community through the development and management of JazzWA saw major growth in the opportunities for jazz musicians in Western Australia.
Alan acted as a mentor for many young musicians in Perth and guided many local musiciansʼ careers by assisting them with management and artistic support.
